Lyrics

Friends
1 Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.

Beloved
2 My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
3 I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.

Lover
4 Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.
5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
6 Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
7 As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
8 There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
9 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.

Friends
10 Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?

Lover
11 I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished and the pomegranates budded.
12 Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib.

Friends
13 Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee.

Lover
What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.

Bible Commentary
1. Whither. The daughters of Jerusalem now address the bride to see what more she has to say.

2. Down into his garden. The anxiety concerning the loss of her beloved is gone.  She knows that he is engaged elsewhere.  Nothing has really come in to mar their felicity.

4. As Tirzah. In vs. 4-10 Solomon pours forth lavish praise of his bride.  Tirzah is probably to be identified with Tell el-Farah, some 7 mi. northeast of Shechem, in the territory of Ephraim, It was doubtless noted for its beauty.
Comely as Jesusalem. Solomon takes his own capital city in southern Palestine to illustrate the outstanding attractiveness of his bride. Jerusalem was noted for its beauty.
Terrible as an army. Beauty and strength are here combined in a description that has appropriately been applied to the church. Some think that the question of this verse is raised by the ladies of the court when they first catch a glimpse of the Shulamite.

8. Threescore queens. This is presumably a reference to Solomon's harem.  The number of wives is far less than that given in 1 Kings 11:3.  Evidently this song is written early in the reign of Solomon.

11. I went down. This statement is obviously by the bride.

12. Amminadib. The meaning of this expression is obscure.  Literally translated it means, "My people, the noble."  The bride imagines herself being lifted up and placed in a chariot, no doubt with Solomon.

13. Return, O Shulamite. Perhaps this statement is by the members of the cortege, who express a desire to look further on the now-acknowledged queen.
What will ye see? A charming display of modesty.
The company. Literally, "the dance".  Some have suggested that this has reference to the choir of the bride's maids and the choir of the bridegroom's best men.  Others think that the reference is to some local custom that we do not now understand.  Still others prefer to transliterate the words as "two armies" (Mahanaim), and see an allusion to the "dance" of the angel host at Mahanaim upon Jacob's return to Canaan.  If this be so, the Shulamite, at this juncture, gives a performance of the "dance of Mahanaim".4

Synopsis of Canticles 6

The discourse between the church and the daughters of Jerusalem is continued in this chapter: they inquire whither her beloved was gone, in order to seek him with her, ver. 1;
she tells them where he was gone, and for what purpose he went thither, and what he was doing there; and claims and asserts her interest in him, ver. 2;
Then follows a commendation of the church by Christ, who admires her beauty, and describes her by her eyes, hair, &c. ver. 4;
and prefers her to all others; being a singular and choice one to him, and the praise of others, ver. 8;
and next he gives an account of his going into his garden, and his design in it, and of what happened to him there, ver. 11.
And the chapter is concluded with a charge to the Shulamite, to turn herself, that she might be looked upon; which occasions a question, to which an answer is returned, ver. 133
