Bible Quotes

They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast.
(Psalm 94:4) ESV

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.
(Proverbs 27:1) ESV

Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
(Isaiah 10:15) ESV

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,
(Jeremiah 9:23) ESV

For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
(1 Corinthians 4:7) ESV

If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.
(2 Corinthians 11:30) ESV

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
(Ephesians 2:8,9) ESV

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
(2 Timothy 3:1-5) ESV

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
(James 3:5) ESV

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
(James 4:13-16) ESV

Boasting and the Bible

Notice how "boasters" are listed along with the wickedest of men. 2 Tim. 3:1-5 "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, BOASTERS, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy"
Rom. 1:30
"Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, BOASTERS, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents"

God wishes people to trust Him and brag upon Him, rather than bragging upon themselves and their own strength. One case in point will suffice to prove this. In 1 Chronicles 21:1, we read of King David, and how Satan provoked David to want to number Israel, so he could boast of his army. Even Joab, David's evil captain of the guard was against this, but he obeyed. What happened? God got so angry with David's wanting to "number" his host, that God came to him and told him that he was going to judge David and take out his wrath on Israel.

To boast of your own strength and rejoice in your boastings is EVIL! James chapter four and verses 15-16 even tell us: "For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil."

Jesus and the Pharisees who bragged about being of a certain seed and of having Abraham as their Father. John chapter 8:33,39,41,48 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

Bragging or Boasting on one's self, or one's movement, leads to them being puffed up with PRIDE, something which keeps people from humbling themselves before God.

Salvation is a free gift and not something to be boasted about. Ephesians 2:8,9: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST.

According to the Bible, we are not to boast, period. We should rather brag on Jesus. For boasting oftentimes leads us to thinking we are something we are not. It makes us think we are better than others or more important. And it can even lead a person to HELL, if he is so used to bragging upon himself that he thinks he is good enough to get to heaven without Jesus Christ.5
