(Exodus 22:2,3) ESV

Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you.
(Deuteronomy 28:47,48) ESV

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

Conduct and the Bible

Since Christians have been “born again” (1 Peter 1:3,4) into God’s family, then it is appropriate to refer to us as children.  Children are to be obedient to their parents.  Our father is God (1 Peter 1:17) and we are to be obedient.  Obedience to God means no longer living our lives after our former ignorant ways.  These ways are called “lusts” or “desires.”  They are sinful things that mankind desires to do, but are outside the will of God.  Peter lists some of these in other areas of the book (cf. 1 Peter 2:1; 1 Peter 4:3).

Instead of being involved in following our sinful passions, Peter says we are to “conduct” ourselves in a certain way.  Peter states first the conduct should be holy.  Since we have been sanctified by the Spirit (1 Peter 1:2),  then we should live this set apart life.  Both sanctified and holy come from the same Greek root.  They both have to do with a life set apart.  Our holiness is derived from our calling.  God has called us to be holy, “as he is holy.” 5
