Fighting and the Bible

What does the Bible say about fighting?

There are many different occasions for fighting. There is the school bully fighting smaller kids; there are brothers and sisters fighting (sibling rivalry); there are street gangs fighting to protect their honor and territory; there are drug dealers fighting their rivals; there are soldiers fighting on the battlefield; and there are individuals hurting others for personal reasons—envy, illegal gain, payback for perceived wrongs against them, etc....

This discussion will focus on the question of whether a Christian should fight for personal reasons. Someone somehow has wronged you, hurt you physically or emotionally or financially, and you are angry. Your rights have been violated. Should you fight back? Should you retaliate to defend yourself and punish your enemy? In this situation, someone is your personal enemy. What should you do?

Jesus clearly teaches us to forgive and forget. Let yourself be hurt without fighting back. Since God forgives us our sins against him without retaliating, we should imitate him and do the same. "You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:43-45)

"But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. It is very clear that we should love everyone, and do good even to those who mistreat us. Though we should not fight back because of personal injury, there is a good kind of fighting - fighting for righteousness. "But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." (1 Timothy 6:11-12)

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

Therefore always love, always forgive, always do good to everyone. Dont fight evil with more evil, but let love and goodness overcome evil. But there is an exception. You have a right to defend yourself if your life is threatened. First, one should try to flee to escape danger. If that is not possible, use the least force to get the protection you need.2
