Bible Quotes

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
(Proverbs 13:20)

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
(Proverbs 17:17)

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
(Proverbs 18:24)

Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
(Proverbs 22:24)

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
(Proverbs 27:6)

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
(Proverbs 27:9,10)

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
(Proverbs 27:17)

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
(Amos 3:3)

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
(John 15:13-15)

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
(2 Corinthians 6:17)

Four Ways to Know your Friends

Friends and the Bible

Real friendship involves loyalty. "A true friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need." Proverbs 17:17, TLB.

The best friend to have is Jesus. "I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from My Father I have made known to you." John 15:15, NIV.

Choose friends who love the Lord and have pure hearts. "Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts." II Timothy 2:22, TLB.

What characteristics make you a good friend? "Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing." Philippians 2:3-4, TLB.

Gossip can destroy friendships. "A gossip separates close friends. Proverbs 16:28, NIV.

Friends are worth keeping. "Never abandon a friend—either yours or your father's. Then you won't need to go to a distant relative for help in your time of need." Proverbs 27:9-10, TLB.

A friend cares enough to be honest with you even if it hurts. "Wounds from a friend are better than kisses from an enemy!" Proverbs 27:6, TLB.5

Friendship

Friendship is co-operative and supportive behaviour between two or more people. In this sense, the term connotes a relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem, and affection and respect along with a degree of rendering service to friends in times of need or crisis. Friends will welcome each other's company and exhibit loyalty towards each other, often to the point of altruism. Their tastes will usually be similar and may converge, and they will share enjoyable activities. They will also engage in mutually helping behaviour, such as exchange of advice and the sharing of hardship. A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviours. Yet for many, friendship is nothing more than the trust that someone or something will not harm them.

Value that is found in friendships is often the result of a friend demonstrating the following on a consistent basis:

  • the tendency to desire what is best for the other,
  • sympathy and empathy,
  • honesty, perhaps in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the truth, especially in terms of pointing out the perceived faults of one's counterpart,
  • mutual understanding.

In a comparison of personal relationships, friendship is considered to be closer than association, although there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations. Friendship and association can be thought of as spanning across the same continuum. The study of friendship is included in sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and zoology. Various theories of friendship have been proposed, among which are social psychology, social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles.8
