Bible Quotes

And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
(Ruth 1:16,17)

After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
(1 Samuel 18:1-4)

When Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king to succeed his father David, he sent his envoys to Solomon, because he had always been on friendly terms with David.
(1 Kings 5:1)

"A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
(Job 6:14)

He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me. My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight. I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth. My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children's sake of mine own body. Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me. All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me. My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
(Job 19:13-22)

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
(Proverbs 27:10)

And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
(Ecclesiastes 4:12)

Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
(Romans 16:3,4)

But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
(Philippians 2:19,20,22)

Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
(Philippians 2:25)
Inspirational Quotes from Famous People

Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing.
--
Elie Wiesel quotes (Romanian born American Writer. Nobel Prize for Peace in 1986. b.1928)

There are not many things in life so beautiful as true friendship, and not many things more uncommon.
--Unknown

True friendship is seen through the heart, not through the eyes.
--
Friendship quotes.

The essence of true friendship is to make allowances for another's little lapses.
--
David Storey quotes (British Novelist, Playwright and Poet, b.1933)

Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.
--
George Washington quotes (American commander in chief of the colonial armies in the American Revolution (1775-83) and subsequently 1st US President (1789-97), 1732-1799)

It is one of the severest tests of friendship to tell your friend his faults. So to love a man that you cannot bear to see a stain upon him, and to speak painful truth through loving words, that is friendship.
--
Henry Ward Beecher quotes (Liberal US Congregational minister, 1813-1887)

A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.

Life's truest happiness is found in friendships we make along the way.

Friendship often ends in love; but love in friendship - never.

True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable.

The greatest sweetener of human life is friendship. To raise this to the highest pitch of enjoyment, is a secret which but few discover.
--
Joseph Addison quotes (English Essayist, Poet, Dramatist and Statesman, 1672-1719)

Friendship improves happiness and abates misery, by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief.

Friendship and the Bible

Real friendship involves loyalty. "A true friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need." Proverbs 17:17, TLB.

The best friend to have is Jesus. "I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from My Father I have made known to you." John 15:15, NIV.

Choose friends who love the Lord and have pure hearts. Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts." II Timothy 2:22, TLB.

What characteristics make you a good friend? "Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing." Philippians 2:3-4, TLB.

Gossip can destroy friendships. "A gossip separates close friends. Proverbs 16:28, NIV.

Friends are worth keeping. "Never abandon a friend—either yours or your father's. Then you won't need to go to a distant relative for help in your time of need." Proverbs 27:9-10, TLB.

A friend cares enough to be honest with you even if it hurts. "Wounds from a friend are better than kisses from an enemy!" Proverbs 27:6, TLB.

Friendship

Friendship is co-operative and supportive behaviour between two or more people. In this sense, the term connotes a relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem, and affection and respect along with a degree of rendering service to friends in times of need or crisis. Friends will welcome each other's company and exhibit loyalty towards each other, often to the point of altruism. Their tastes will usually be similar and may converge, and they will share enjoyable activities. They will also engage in mutually helping behaviour, such as exchange of advice and the sharing of hardship. A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviours. Yet for many, friendship is nothing more than the trust that someone or something will not harm them.

Value that is found in friendships is often the result of a friend demonstrating the following on a consistent basis:

  • the tendency to desire what is best for the other,
  • sympathy and empathy,
  • honesty, perhaps in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the truth, especially in terms of pointing out the perceived faults of one's counterpart,
  • mutual understanding.

In a comparison of personal relationships, friendship is considered to be closer than association, although there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations. Friendship and association can be thought of as spanning across the same continuum. The study of friendship is included in sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and zoology. Various theories of friendship have been proposed, among which are social psychology, social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles.9
