Bible Quotes

And the Lord God said, it is not good that the man should be alone, I will make him an help meet for him.
(Genesis 2:18)

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
(Genesis 2:24)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
(Proverbs 3:5,6)

Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
(Proverbs 10:12)

Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.
(Proverbs 18:22)

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
(Ecclesiastes 9:9)

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband; and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
(1 Corinthians 7:2-4)

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
(Ephesians 4:31,32)

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let everyone of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
(Ephesians 5:21-33)

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.
(Hebrews 13:4)

Marriage and the Bible

What does the Bible teach about marriage? Marriage is a permanent, committed partnership between a man and a woman.
"And that a man should leave his father and mother, and be forever united to his wife. The two shall become one—no longer two, but one! And no man may divorce what God has joined together. Matthew 19:5-6, TLB

How should husbands relate to their wives?
"And you husbands, show the same kind of love to your wives as Christ showed to the church when He died for her…That is how husbands should treat their wives, loving them as parts of themselves. For since a man and his wife are now one, a man is really doing himself a favour and loving himself when he loves his wife! Ephesians 5:25-28, TLB

Husbands should honour their wives.
"You husbands must be careful of your wives, being thoughtful of their needs and honouring them as the weaker sex. Remember that you and your wife are partners in receiving God's blessings, and if you don't treat her as you should, your prayers will not get ready answers." I Peter 3:7, TLB

How should the wife relate to her husband?
"You wives must submit to your husbands' leadership in the same way you submit to the Lord. For a husband is in charge of his wife in the same way Christ is in charge of His body the church. (He gave His very life to take care of it and be its Saviour!) So you wives must willingly obey your husbands in everything, just as the church obeys Christ." Ephesians 5:22-24, TLB

Does that mean the wife must do all the "give and take"? No! Marriage requires submission by both partners.
"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Ephesians 5:21, NIV

What counsel forbids physical or verbal spouse abuse?
"Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them." Colossians 3:19, NIV

For a successful marriage, determine to settle misunderstanding at once.
"If you are angry, don't sin by nursing your grudge. Don't let the sun go down with you still angry—get over it quickly." Ephesians 4:26, TLB

Keep the relationship growing in unity and understanding.
"Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Try always to be led along together by the Holy Spirit, and so be at peace with one another." Ephesians 4:2-3, TLB

How should society view marriage?
"Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." Hebrews 13:4, NIV

By what commandments has God guarded marriage? The seventh and the tenth.
"You shall not commit adultery." and "You shall not covet your neighbour's wife." Exodus 20:14,17, NIV

What is the only acceptable reason that Jesus gave for ending a marriage?
"But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to commit adultery, and anyone who marries a woman so divorced commits adultery." Matthew 5:32, NIV

For how long is marriage intended to last?
"By law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage." Romans 7:2, NIV

What instruction is given about who to marry?
"Do not be mismated with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" II Corinthians 6:14, RSV

Romance and the gift of sexuality are blessed by God when exercised within the bonds of marriage.
"Let your manhood be a blessing; rejoice in the wife of your youth. Let her charms and tender embrace satisfy you. Let her love alone fill you with delight." Proverbs 5:18-19, TLB5

Marriage

Marriage is a social, religious, spiritual or legal union of individuals that creates kinship. This union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding and the married status created is sometimes called wedlock.

Marriage is an institution in which interpersonal relationships (usually intimate and sexual) are acknowledged by the state, by religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

People marry for many reasons, but usually one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, and economic stability; the formation of a family unit; procreation and the education and nurturing of children; legitimizing sexual relations; public declaration of love.

Marriage may take many forms: for example, a union between one man and one woman as husband and wife is a monogamous heterosexual marriage; polygamy – in which a person takes more than one spouse – is common in some societies. Some jurisdictions and religious denominations recognize same-sex marriage, uniting people of the same sex.

A marriage is often formalized by a ceremony called a wedding, which in modern times is usually performed by a religious minister or a civil officer. The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved and, in many societies, their extended families.7
