Bible Quotes

Thou shalt not commit adultery.
(Exodus 20:14)

And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
(Leviticus 20:10)

To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
(Proverbs 2:16-19)

But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
(Proverbs 6:32)

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery
(Matthew 5:27,28,32)

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
(Matthew 15:19)

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
(Matthew 19:9)

And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
(Mark 10:12)

Inspirational Quotes from Famous People

Adultery itself in its principle is many times nothing but a curious inquisition after, and envy of another man's enclosed pleasures: and there have been many who refused fairer objects that they might ravish an enclosed woman from her retirement and single possessor.
--
Jeremy Taylor quotes (English Anglican, Clergyman, Writer and Bishop, 1613-1667)

The evils of the body are, murder, theft, and adultery; of the tongue, lying, slander, abuse, and idle talk; of the mind, covetousness, hatred, and error.
-
Buddha quotes (Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta, the founder of Buddhism, 563-483 B.C.)

Divorce is the sacrament of adultery.
-
French Proverb quotes

The first breath of adultery is the freest; after it, constraints aping marriage develop
--John Updike American, Novelist Quotes

Passion is the evil in adultery. If a man has no opportunity of living with another man's wife, but if it is obvious for some reason that he would like to do so, and would do so if he could, he is no less guilty than if he was caught in the act.
--Saint Augustine Author Nationalities, Saint Quotes

I do not think that there are any men who are faithful to their wives.
--Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis 1929-1994, American First Lady, Wife of John F. Kennedy & Aristotle Onassis

According to my sister, the expert novelist Jackie Collins, most men stray. And sex doesn't mean anything to most men. But I wouldn't date a man who slept around. Absolutely not. I've divorced people for that.
--Joan Collins 1933-, British-born American Actress

I've looked on many women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times. God knows I will do this and forgives me.
--Jimmy Carter 1924-, American Statesman, 39th President

As a musician I tell you that if you were to suppress adultery, fanaticism, crime, evil, the supernatural, there would no longer be the means for writing one note.
--Georges Bizet French, Composer Quotes

God's forgiveness is the only thing. And, well, I take full responsibility for the adultery. It was my fault and, you know, no matter what went on, the man has to take responsibility; and I do.
--Jim Bakker American, Celebrity Quotes

No adultery is bloodless.
--Natalia Ginzburg Author Nationalities, Musician Quotes

You know, fifty percent of the marriages in America end in divorce, and eighty percent of married couples, one or the other has had adultery.
--Mark Ruffalo American, Actor Quotes

I do not believe we can blame genetics for adultery, homosexuality, dishonesty and other character flaws.

Adultery and the Bible

God's commandments forbid adultery. "You shall not commit adultery." Exodus 20:14, NIV.

To leave your spouse for another person may be legal, but it is adultery in God's eyes. "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery." Luke 16:18, NIV.

Lust is a form of adultery. "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Matthew 5:27-28, NIV.

How did Jesus relate to a woman caught in the act of adultery? "Then Jesus stood up again and said to her, 'Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?' No sir, she said. And Jesus said, 'Neither do I. Go and sin no more.'" John 8:10-11, TLB.

It is God's will that we should avoid sexual immorality. "It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality." I Thessalonians 4:3, NIV.5

Definition of Adultery

Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse.4

Adultery

Adultery is the voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and another person who is not his or her spouse, though in many places it is only considered adultery when a married woman has sexual relations with someone who is not her husband and in others it is only considered adultery when a married woman has sexual relations with someone without the permission of her husband. In most cases, in Western countries, only the married party is said to have committed adultery, and if both parties are married (but not to each other) then they both commit separate acts of adultery. In other countries, both parties to the adultery are considered guilty, while in others again only the woman is able to commit adultery and to be considered guilty.

Adultery is also referred to as extramarital sex, philandery, or infidelity, but does not include fornication. The term "adultery" for many people carries a moral or religious association, while the term "extramarital sex" is morally or judgmentally neutral.

Historically, adultery has been considered to be a serious offense by many cultures. In some countries, adultery is a crime. However, even in jurisdictions where adultery is not itself a criminal offense, it may still have legal consequences, particularly in divorce cases. For example, where there is fault-based family law, it almost always constitutes grounds for divorce, it may be a factor to consider in a property settlement, it may affect the status of children, the custody of children, etc. Moreover, adultery can result in social ostracism in some parts of the world.

Three recent studies in the United States, using nationally representative samples, have found that about 10-15% of women and 20-25% of men admitted to having engaged in extramarital sex.7
