Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
(Psalm 23:4)

Bible Quotes

And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
(Genesis 37:34,35)

And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years. And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
(Ruth 1:3,5)

And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
(Ruth 1:20,21)

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
(Proverbs 15:13)

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
(Ecclesiastes 7:2-4)

Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down. Forbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men. So I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.
(Ezekiel 24:16-18)

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
(2 Corinthians 1:3,4)

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

Inspirational Quotes from Famous People

Bereavement is a darkness impenetrable to the imagination of the unbereaved.
--
Iris Murdoch quotes (British Novelist and Philosopher, 1919-1999)

Never does one feel oneself so utterly helpless as in trying to speak comfort for great bereavement. I will not try it. Time is the only comforter for the loss of a mother.
-
Jules Renard quotes (French Writer, 1864-1910)

Bereavement is the sharpest challenge to our trust in God; if faith can overcome this, there is no mountain which it cannot remove.
-
Dean Inge quotes (Dean of St Paul's, London , 1860-1954)

Bereavement is the deepest initiation into the mysteries of human life, an initiation more searching and profound than even happy love.
-
Dean Inge quotes (Dean of St Paul's, London , 1860-1954)

As we get older, bereavement, illness, physical impairments, as well as living far away from family members, could cause any one of us to be isolated - which can lead to loneliness and ill health in older people.
--
Gordon Lishman quotes

Never does one feel oneself so utterly helpless as in trying to speak comfort for great bereavement. I will not try it. Time is the only comforter for the loss of a mother.
--Jane Welsh Carlyle 1801-1866, British Diarist

Guilt is perhaps the most painful companion of death.
--Elisabeth KnBler-Ross 1926-, Swiss-born American Psychiatrist7

Bereavement and the Bible

God has promised an end to tears, death, sorrow, crying, and pain. "He will wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain. All of that has gone forever." Revelation 21:4, TLB.

Grief does not last forever. "Weeping may go on all night, but in the morning there is joy." Psalm 30:5, TLB.

God will heal your grief. "He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds." Psalm 147:3, TLB.

The dead will live again. "Don't be so surprised! Indeed the time is coming when all the dead in their graves shall hear the voice of God's Son, and shall rise again—those who have done good, to eternal life; and those who have continued in evil, to judgment." John 5:28-29, TLB.

How can we face death? We need not be afraid if God is with us. "Even when walking through the dark valley of death I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me, guarding, guiding all the way." Psalm 23:4, TLB.

What is death like? It is like falling asleep.  "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope." I Thessalonians 4:13, NIV.
"After He had said this, He went on to tell them, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.' His disciples replied, 'Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.' Jesus had been speaking of his death, but His disciples thought He meant natural sleep. So then He told them plainly, 'Lazarus is dead'." John 11:11-14, NIV. "

Where does Daniel say the dead are sleeping? "Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake." Daniel 12:2, NIV.

Do the dead know anything? "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun… Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom." Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, 10, NIV.

But death is not the end! "But your dead will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust, wake up and shout for joy." Isaiah 26:19, NIV.

What does Jesus promise those who die? "I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death." Hosea 13:14, NIV.

Resurrection power comes from Christ. "For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." I Corinthians 15:21-22, NIV.

Both good and evil people are resurrected. "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned." John 5:28-29, NIV.

The righteous are resurrected at the second coming of Christ. "For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." I Thessalonians 4:16-17, NIV.

What will we be like after the resurrection? "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body." Philippians 3:20-21, NIV.

How long will the resurrected righteous live?  "And they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection." Luke 20:36, NIV.

How long do the wicked wait after the first resurrection before they are raised? "They [the righteous] came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.)" Revelation 20:4-5, NIV.

What is their fate? "Fire came down from heaven and devoured them." Revelation 20:9, NIV.

Who are the wicked? "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." Revelation 21:8, NIV.5

Grief

Grief is a multi-faceted response to loss. It includes the emotional numbness, disbelief, separation, anxiety, despair, sadness, and loneliness that accompany the loss of someone or something loved. Although conventionally focused on the emotional response to loss, it also has physical, cognitive, behavioral, social, and philosophical dimensions. Common to human experience is the death of a loved one, whether it be a friend, family, or other companion. While the terms are often used interchangeably, bereavement often refers to the state of loss, and grief to the reaction to loss. Losses can range from loss of employment, pets, status, a sense of safety, order, or possessions, to the loss of loved ones. Our response to loss is varied and researchers have moved away from conventional views of grief (that is, that people move through an orderly and predictable series of responses to loss) to one that considers the wide variety of responses that are influenced by personality, family, culture, and spiritual and religious beliefs and practices.

Bereavement, while a normal part of life for us all, carries a degree of risk when limited support is available. Severe reactions to loss may carry over into familial relations and cause trauma for children, spouses and any other family members: there is an increased risk of marital breakup following the death of a child, for example. Issues of personal faith and beliefs may also face challenge, as bereaved persons reassess personal definitions in the face of great pain. While many who grieve are able to work through their loss independently, accessing additional support from bereavement professionals may promote the process of healing. Grief counselling, professional support groups or educational classes, and peer-led support groups are primary resources available to the bereaved.8
